Turmeric has been revered in India for over 3000 years because of it's health promoting properties and unique taste. It is long recognised for it's anti-inflammatory properties. Recent research has revealed even more benefits this yellow gem can bring into our lives.

The list below has been compiled by Doug English (Veterinarian) who has successfully been using turmeric on himself and to treat animals in his care.

1. Skin Health

Can help in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions and speed up wound healing.

2. Arthritis

Alleviates pain and movement constriction in arthritic humans, horses, dogs and cats.

3. Immunity

Builds up resistance to infection and speeds up curative effects of medicine, and noticeably shortens virus activity.

4. Cancer

Lots of evidence in published literature of positive effects of turmeric on various types of cancer cells.

5. Dementia

Decreases amyloid plaque (an abnormal protein) in human brains. Also works well in improving the activity level and socialisation in old dogs.

6. Liver Detoxifier

Increases the levels of glutathione (a major anti-oxidant and conjugating agent) in the liver which is used to detoxify and eliminate harmful compounds.

Including turmeric into your daily diet can be as simple as preparing a turmeric tea with a few slices of turmeric, ginger, lemon and hot water. I also like to add some coconut nectar to sweeten it a little.

I also love adding a teaspoon of turmeric powder to carrot, ginger and lemon juice. It is delicious!

I use turmeric in quite a few different recipes such as my Nut Free Coconut and Lemon Slice, Thai Style Coconut Soup and Pumpkin Soup which are all featured in my book The Healthy Coconut.

Doug's Golden Paste recipe is fantastic. It is made with turmeric and coconut oil and is specifically designed for healing for both humans and pets.
