There are so many things we can do with coconut and when you do it yourself you can be sure to avoid additives, sugars, and even the influences of certain kinds of packaging.
Making your own coconut milk is quick, easy and you only need a few simple ingredients.
Magic Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups unsweetened desiccated coconut, soaked for 1 hour
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch of vanilla essence
4 cups of boiled water
2 tbsp coconut oil (optional and good for added creaminess)
You will also need:
A nut milk strainer bag
A blender
This is so easy and you will be amazed how delicious and fresh coconut milk will taste when you are making your own.
What to do:
Combine the desiccated coconut and water in your blender. Let it soak for a few minutes and then start blending until the ingredients are well combined.
Place the nut milk bag inside of a bowl and pour the milk from the blender through the nut milk bag keeping your hands out of the way because the ingredients are hot.
Press the milk out and don’t throw the coconut flesh away.
Pour the creamy coconut milk in mason jars or air tight container and let it cool. This can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days, sealed in a bottle or jar.
The milk will separate; shake it well before you use it.
Use it in your tea or coffee, in your curries, desserts, smoothies, or make some delicious coconut yoghurt.
Enjoy!
