Bamboo Charcoal: Good for your Skin, your Home & the Environment

Posted by Coconut Magic on .

In recent years, we have been witnessing a shift from purchasing high quality, long-lasting materials to consuming large amount quick and cheap materials, following trends and fashion. This is yet another example of fast-paced and unsustainable consumerism. More and more, we have come to realise the impact our purchases have on the environment and ourselves throughout the products' entire lifecycle. Same as putting a processed cosmetic on our skin, wearing synthetic fabrics can have damaging impacts on both our health and nature over the long-run. Bamboo Charcoal is currently making waves in the industry and we have been interested in finding out why it is so amazing and how it is made by chatting with our friends at Yo Home.

On top of its low environmental impact and affordable price, it is the health-related aspects of the Bamboo Charcoal that makes it so precious. Referred to as “the Black Diamond” in ancient Japan, bamboo charcoal has been used in purifying water, eliminating odours, even used in tea and foods.

Bamboo charcoal fabric characteristics:

- 100% colour and dye-free

- Environmentally friendly

- Vegan

How is it made?

1. Bamboo Charcoal Nano-sized powder
Produced from burning organic bamboo in a closed-up system, then grinding and filtering it into a nano-sized powder.

2. Bamboo Viscose
Made from dissolving organic bamboo pulp. The old fashioned bamboo viscose process is the most sustainable fabrication process, using a closed-loop system. The organic solvent and water in the process is recycled and reused.

3. Blended & Woven together
The bamboo charcoal nanoparticles are blended and woven together with natural bamboo fibres. Rather than simply coated onto the surface.

4. 100% Dye Free
The natural pigment of bamboo charcoal fabric is achieved without any dyes. The natural colour of the bamboo charcoal is what creates the fibre’s beautiful charcoal grey colour.

Benefits of using Bamboo Charcoal in your bed (yewww!)

The natural pigment of bamboo charcoal bed linen is achieved without any dyes, rather it is the natural colour of the bamboo charcoal. This is a result of the bamboo charcoal being woven together with natural bamboo fibres creating it's beautiful, deep, charcoal grey tones.

Soft, luxurious, comfy, bamboo fabric is a must in the bed. Bamboo fabric breathes very well and it’s one of the reason why it feels so good. A breathable fabric allows your body temperature to maintain a good balance, never get too hot or too cold... Sweet dreams!

Benefits of using Bamboo Charcoal on your body

Bacteria and odour control
Bamboo Charcoal fiber effectively decomposes the micro-organisms attached to its surface, meaning your towel stays fresh for longer and never smells.

Super absorbent
Filled with countless micro-holes, bamboo charcoal yarn effectively absorbs odour, sweat and moisture.

Soft on sensitive skin
The fabric inhibits bacterial metabolism causing fewer allergic skin reactions than other fibers sterilized with antimicrobial agents.

Superior Durability
The bamboo charcoal nanoparticles are embedded in the fabric rather than simply coated onto the surface, meaning the fabric can be washed numerous times with no adverse effect on the charcoal qualities.

  • Love bamboo charcoal although I have not yet tried it in my textiles or towels. I’ve been using it as an alternative toothpaste, and most of my cosmetics are now bamboo charcoal something. I have also recently discovered these soaps which I love.
